Workforce Plan

Identifying workforce challenges and opportunities in the mining and automotive industries

The mining and automotive industries are critical to the Australian economy and to Australia’s commitment to transition to net zero. These industries need highly skilled workforces to thrive.

As a Jobs and Skills Council, we use information based on labour market trends, national data and, most importantly, on-the-ground insights from industry to help inform our annual workforce plan.

Informed by constant consultation via our Industry Stewardship initiatives, outcomes and insights from our workforce plans help industry address emerging challenges in the mining and automotive industries. This promotes future ready workforces, now and into the future.

2025 Workforce Plan Consultation Papers now available

Our 2025 Workforce Plan—Evolving Together Consultation Papers set the course for future action.

This paper identifies short-term challenges such as skills shortages, retention issues, gender diversity gaps, and declining Vocational Education and Training (VET) enrolments. And long-term shifts including decarbonisation, Net Zero, electrification, and sustainability.

The consultation papers aim to gather input and guidance from stakeholders to align our strategies and actions with industry needs and ensure effective stewardship. Our consultation-driven, industry-led approach ensures that the voice of our stakeholders is heard when shaping policies and strategies.
